On June 3, 2026, an open dialogue, "Border Guards – Heroes of the First Days of the War," was held at Brest State Technical University to commemorate Border Guard Day.
The speakers were Vasily Konstantinovich Turkevich, a retired lieutenant colonel and pre-conscription instructor at the Brest State Polytechnic College branch of Brest State Technical University, and Svetlana Nikolaevna Dranevich, head of the scientific and exhibition department at the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex.
The event transported the audience back to June 1941. The details of the border battles, which became the first test for the entire Soviet people, were covered in detail. Particular attention was paid to the heroism of the defenders of the Brest Fortress.
The speakers not only described the overall defense but also shared the stories of the border guards themselves. These were the people who met the war at dawn on June 22nd right on the border and fulfilled their military duty to the end, demonstrating incredible courage and fortitude in the face of superior enemy forces. Their heroic deed became one of the most striking symbols of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
The dialogue allowed the students to experience the scale of the tragedy and the great spirit of the Soviet soldiers who defended their land.
